The inspiration for this drawing comes from Leonardo da Vinci's chalk and ink drawing 'La Bella Principessa'. I love the quiet, understated beauty of portraits and icons of the Renaissance period. The simplicity of Da vinci’s drawing and the softness of the colour and mood, is what drew me to it, and I wanted to bring out these qualities in my own drawing, The model is my niece, Sarah, chosen for her elegance and long, flowing hair.
I began by carefully drawing the figure to ensure accurate drawing and a well-balanced composition. I then slowly built up layers of colour, blending as I went along, until the balance of shapes and colour felt right.
